Say What’s Good with Sports & Hip/Hop?

Image result for hip hop artists and sports teamsImage result for hip hop artists and sports teamsImage result for hip hop artists and sports teams

Hip/hop and professional sports, in particular the NBA, are more similar than you might think. Both fields are competitive, breathtaking, and allow for great debates. Rappers are often seen interacting with world class athletes, such as Lil Wayne hanging out with Cristiano Ronaldo, 50 Cent breaking bread with Floyd “Money” Mayweather, or Drake air balling shots with University of Kentucky basketball team. Either way, sports and hip/hop have emerged as one, and it’s not shocking that ESPN is continuing to incorporate hip/hop artists and their songs to expand its audience.

Drake officially became the Global Ambassador for the Toronto Raptors in 2013. On November 16 the Raptors held their annual Drake night hosting the Western Conference Champion Golden State Warriors. Despite the Toronto native and self-proclaimed “6 God” (the numeral refers to the city’s area code) being known as the NBA’s most enthusiastic bandwagon fan he played antagonist, taunting Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and more of the GSW.

It didn’t seem like a coincidence when Drake bumped into KD during a post-game interview judging by the scowl he shot at Drake shading him into the stratosphere.

Two major polarizing figures in their respective professions showing some playful disrespect to one another is prime entertainment. You have got to love it.

ESPN is recognized as the “worldwide leader in sports” due to its innovative methods on how the fans perceive the images and hear the sounds of the game, regardless of what that game may be.

Hip/hop is about dance, art and expression. The characteristics that hip/hop embodies has broken through its humble roots and continued its influence on magazine publishing, television, sexuality and social issues showing that it has grown into the sport world’s favorite genre.

What was once a world counterculture, is now shaping to be the soundtrack to a lot of marketing and advertising projects for businesses around the world.

ESPN is keying in on the trend by becoming a major sports brand bringing this to the forefront, prospering off the relationship these two worlds have shared for decades now.

In one of Drakes songs titled “Thank Me Now” he tries to explain why so many NBA players (Allen Iverson, Chris Webber, and Shaquille O’Neal) have all put out rap songs. while several emcees- The Game, Master P, Cam’ron etc. aspired to be ballers.

He raps, “Damn, I swear sports and music are so synonymous / ’cause we wanna be them and they wanna be us.”

At any rate, whether sportscasting a live show or promoting an activity on twitter, getting the audience involved and excited is pivotal.  When ESPN’s SportsCenter anchors break trending news with clever hip/hop references or begin their show with popular hip/hop instrumentals it’s always responsive to the audience.

The genre is truly in a new golden era, penetrating even more artistic, social and political hemispheres than before.

Chapecoense awarded Copa Sudamerica Chapmionship after tragic plane crash

Chapecoense, the Brazilian soccer club whose plane crashed en route to the championship match, has been awarded the Copa Sudamerica title a little over a week ago.

Atlético Nacional (Medellín), whom Chapecoense were scheduled to play in the final, asked the South American Football Federation (CONMEBOL) to name Chapecoense the honorary champions of the tournament.

For their actions of fair play, Atlético Nacional received the Centennial CONMEBOL Fair Play award of $1 million by the South American Football Federation.

Atlético Nacional willingly gave up their possible title in respect, and showed a prime example of sportsmanship in the world of sports. Atlético Nacional has been applauded for their sportsmanship by fans of the game, while still feeling the heartache of a detrimental loss.

Clubs around the world paid tribute to Chapecoense, holding a minute of silence before matches. Players have voiced their support for the club, especially Brazilians David Luiz and teammate Willian.

Many clubs around the world have opened their arms to Chapecoense. Multiple teams have offered to loan players to the team as they rebuild for the future. Big name professionals who have recently retired, such as Ronaldihno, have also voiced their willingness to play for them for free. Barcelona, a Spanish club, has invited Chapecoense in their annual Joan Gamper Trophy match.

There is an outpouring of support for the club, who continues to mourn. The club’s vice-president, and now acting president, Ivan Tozzo, has stated that the club will rebuild, but it will need the help of the greater soccer community.

The plane crashed on November 28, killing 71 people. The plane was taking Chapecoense to Medellín, Colombia, to play Atlético Nacional. Chapecoense lost 19 of its players as well as staff members. There were six survivors of the plane crash, including 3 Chapecoense players.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino aims for 48 team World Cup

FIFA’s President, Gianni Infantino, hopes to expand the World Cup to a 48 team tournament by 2026. Infantino has expressed this idea within his first year of presidency.

FIFA is the governing body of international soccer. Not far in the past, FIFA had a large case of corruption. With FIFA’s corruption scandal still looming in the heads of soccer fans all over the world, Infantino must turn the iconic brand around. Multiple executives and officials were tied to the scandal, including former President Sepp Blatter. Infantino has no easy feat on his hands, since a majority of fans still assume that most people tied to FIFA are corrupt.

The last time there was an expansion in the number of teams in the World Cup was in 1998 when it moved from 24 teams to 32. If the most viewed tournament in the world went from 32 teams to 48 teams, viewership would likely continue to rise. The viewership of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil was an astounding 3.2 billion viewers.

But clearly getting more viewers is not Infantino’s intention. For a newly appointed president of a brand that is trying to rebuild itself, trying to make a change as big as adapting the World Cup is a very bold move. Perhaps it is a sign of new positive change and better things to come for what is still seen as a battered organization. It is too early to tell. Currently the proposition to add more teams is not favored by the public.

FIFA made an astounding $2.6 billion profit from the 2014 World Cup, which lasted from

June 12, 2014 to July 13, 2014. With such amounts of money in the air, there is no surprise that bribery and corruption goes on. But Infantino clearly wants FIFA to move forward, trying to leave his mark as he goes.

FIFA stands for Fédération Internationale de Football Association. It has a very rich history, beginning in 1904. The first World Cup tournament took place in 1930, and happens every 4 years. A total of 13 teams were in the World Cup of 1930. Since then, the number of teams continues to grow and is currently at 32.

Rogue one is a story that follows the other seven movies but is separate from the trilogies. This story is set to focus on the events between Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars IV: A New Hope.  The stand-alone film offers a look into how the plan for the Death Star were retrieved.

This film has perfect timing because Star Wars The Force Awakens was such a huge hit that fans were practically begging for more.  The Force Awakens was release last December and fans are waiting for the sequel of the eighth episode to come out but due to scheduling the 7th, 8th, and 9th movies have release dates separated by two year each.  This is a great idea of Disney to offer stand-alone films in between each of the trilogy episodes to quench Star Wars fans appetites.

Formula E Gets Solar Energy Uplift

Formula E racing is getting quite the shift in gears as world renowned environmentalist Bertrand Piccard puts his two sense into the sport.

Piccard is well known for his two record breaking solar powered trips around the world. One being aboard a hot air ballon and the other in a solar powered aircraft named Solar Impulse 2. Piccard stated that Formula E is for car racing, what Solar Impulse is for aviation.

Solar Impulse 2.jpg

His most recent world record was the 23 day trip around the world aboard the Solar Impulse. The Solar Impulse is an aircraft that has a wing span wider than a Boeing 747, has 4 batteries, and 17,000 solar cells.”It feels like science fiction,” stated Piccard, “you have no noise, no pollution, no fuel and you know you can fly forever” as he described his experience during the 23 day flight around the world.

After this astonishing feat, Piccard turned to the ground as he channelled his focus towards renewable energy within the auto racing industry. Piccard praised Formula E for leading the charge in making a more eco friendly car as a core part of the sport. This shift in engine style is perfectly timed as we see a more green friendly initiative that is spreading through society. Like any other sport, one must adapt to the changing times to stay relevant or else its popularity will slowly fade away. The move to team up with a well accomplished environmentalist like Piccard is an excellent move for the auto-racing industry.

“It’s the wonders and miracles that clean technology can achieve.”

“It’s a new laboratory showing how clean technology can be sexy. It’s not anymore about something that is boring and expensive, it’s something that really attacks the awareness of people”, speaking of solar powered machines. As indicated by Piccard, the popularity of eco-friendly machines is growing making the shift from a gas guzzling, high pollution race car more practical. The smell of burning rubber and taste of exhaust filled air from the traditional race car will never be fully replaced by all electric cars, but that doesn’t mean more eco-friendly cars can’t be just as exciting.

Formula E teaming up with Piccard can only prove to be beneficial to the sport. Having the support from such an accomplished aviator and environmentalist will help propel Formula E and the sport of auto-racing further into the future.

“This is the future of car racing. People are starting to get fed up now of cars that make so much noise, so much pollution. You have to go into the future, not into the past” stated Piccard during a CNN interview.

Grand Rapid Continues to Strengthen its Brand with the Medical Mile

Grand Rapids, Michigan has become a source for world class healthcare.  There has been over two billion dollars’ worth of medical-related development situated in the Hillside District. Located on Michigan Street this development has transformed aging homes and other buildings into a major hub of medical research, education and medical services. This is yet another renovation of the city. This growth has created an additional 14,500 jobs along with a prosperous medical community. This has helped the economics of the city which has seen a declining manufacturing base of employment. The Medical Mile is home to the Van Andel Institute, Michigan State University College of Human Medicine,  Meijer Heart Center, and Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital just to name a few.

The Medical Mile is a great example how very successful entrepreneurs have given back to the community in a generous and compassionate way. One example of this generosity is the Helen DeVos Children’s Hospital. This is a pediatric hospital that is a division of Spectrum Health. It is named for Helen DeVos, wife of Amway founder Richard DeVos, a major donor. Fred and Lena Meijer showed their dedication to the community by being a major contributor along with inspiring other people to donate to the Fred and Lena Meijer Heart Center. These partnerships are important in aiding the health care brand and the future growth of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

In the way of employment opportunities the Medical Mile Resource Group stated this: “The Medical Mile will create thousands of jobs for those in the medical field; however, the increase in research and medical facilities will also generate demand for more non-medical staff, more bus drivers, more banks, businesses, coffee shops and housing. In short, the growth within the Medical Mile will stimulate the Grand Rapids economy as a whole, not just the medical sector”.

This large medical development has expanded to other areas of the city. With the enormous amount of traffic in the area new entrepreneurs are taking notice. They continue to capitalize on opportunities outside the medical profession by providing new goods and services. These new investments provide employment prospects and a tax base separate to the medical and research professions. This builds economic value for Grand Rapids and surrounding communities.

Public-private partnerships have played a major role in the resurgent of the city. Grand Rapids like other mid-sized manufacturing cities have suffered financially by the departure of manufacturing. These public-private partnerships have and will continue to generate solutions for the continued growth of Grand Rapids, Michigan.
